• The manufacturer made less chips in the previous period than the market later turns out to want. This problem is most obvious with memory chips. Maxim always seems to make too little chips... ;-). Some say that Intel also creates and artificial shortage to keep the prices high, but I doubt that.
• The manufacturer stopped making the chip. These chips are called 'obsolete' or 'phased out'.
